About the Role
Associate Family Law Attorney (Remote - Virginia)
CRITICAL REQUIREMENT: Candidates must be an active member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing to be considered for this role.
About the Position: Are you an experienced Virginia domestic relations attorney seeking a fulfilling position centered on strategic, low-friction resolutions? If you prioritize constructive advocacy, client mental wellness, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance, we would love to connect with you.
We are a growing Northern Virginia firm operating entirely on a decentralized, work-from-home model. Our firm is built for practitioners who do their finest work outside the constraints of a conventional office setting, possess the self-discipline to manage deadlines without hand-holding, and excel when given complete ownership over their schedule. We provide the updated tech stack, optimized case management systems, and communication platforms necessary to empower independent legal professionals. In this role, you will guide matters from inception to final decree with genuine independence, while remaining fully supported by a close-knit, collaborative internal staff.
Our Approach to Family Law: We believe that how a case is handled matters just as much as how it resolves. Every decision we make is guided by a commitment to resolution over conflict and long-term stability over short-term wins. This commitment looks like:
Leading with Negotiation: Helping clients prioritize what they actually need to move forward, and opening cooperative channels with opposing counsel rather than rushing into an aggressive litigation strategy.
Setting the Right Tone Early: De-escalating disputes from the very first interaction to change the dynamic of the entire case for the better.
Keeping the Focus on Resolution: Choosing constructive, professional language over inflammatory rhetoric to save clients time, money, and unnecessary stress.
Knowing When Court Is the Right Tool: Confidently moving forward with judicial intervention when settlement negotiations break down and a client's interests cannot be protected otherwise. Going to court when necessary is a strategic extension of our approach, not a failure of it.
Responsibilities
Case Management: Represent clients across all phases of family law matters—including divorce, custody, visitation, support, enforcement, modifications, and equitable distribution—from open to close.
Strategic Planning: Develop thoughtful case strategies that prioritize settlement and minimize unnecessary conflict for families.
Advocacy & Negotiation: Negotiate directly with opposing counsel to achieve favorable, durable, out-of-court outcomes for clients.
Litigation Support: Appear in Virginia courts when necessary, representing clients with exceptional professionalism and composure.
Client Communication: Proactively communicate with clients, keeping them informed, grounded, and focused on long-term goals throughout their case.
Document Drafting: Conduct thorough legal research and draft high-standard pleadings, agreements, motions, and other case documents.
Team Collaboration: Coordinate effectively with experienced support staff (paralegals and administrative teams) to maintain organized case files and meet all deadlines.
Qualifications & Skills
Bar Admission: Active member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing (Required).
Experience: 3 to 7 years of dedicated Virginia family law experience, with a proven track record of handling cases independently and appearing in court.
Philosophy Alignment: Demonstrated strength in negotiation and settlement strategy, with a practice philosophy that treats court as a last resort.
Remote Competency: High proficiency with computer systems and modern software tools, combined with the self-organization and discipline required to thrive in a remote work environment.
Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a genuinely client-centered, empathetic approach to managing sensitive personal dynamics.
Billable Target: Ability to meet an achievable and sustainable billable hour requirement of 1,440 hours per year.
